BORPower® lubricant additives
Friction, abrasion and corrosion are a significant cause for the deterioration of the performance and the life time of engines and machines in the private, commercial and industrial sector. Moreover, friction is responsible for a reduced efficiency of the machine, which yields increased energy, fuel or supplementary material consumption.
The exceptional properties of NNT’s high-tech materials boron diamond powder (MCDP) and nano boron contained in the product series BORPower® help to achieve a significant and sustaining reduction of friction, abrasion and corrosion on working metal surfaces. Given today’s ramping up energy expenditures, raw material shortage and environmental pollution, BORPower® considerably reduces costs and saves the environment.
The lubricants market already offers numerous types of products for reducing friction, abrasion and corrosion such as chemical lubricants, solid lubricants or combined hybrid lubricants. The main task of a lubricant is to build up a film between two frictional surfaces. This film shall inhibit the direct contact of the frictional surfaces, which is the cause of abrasion and friction (heat development). In addition, the lubricant can help to cool the frictional surfaces, to seal the surfaces, to prohibit corrosion on the surfaces or to reduce the running noise.
This set of tasks of easy written down, but hard to implement. Even the best polished surface in an engine or motor has a roughness that can disrupt the lubricating film. When metal grinds on metal, particles are rubbed off that can build up corrosive acids after chemically reacting with the ambient humidity, impurities in the lubricant or the lubricant itself. Such acids can accelerate the abrasion process in the machine (micro pitting). This problem occurs in particular with chemical lubricants (and similar additives), since the active ingredients in these products break-up under the high pressures and temperatures at the frictional surfaces. The consequence is that the lubricant becomes harmful rather than helpful to the engine or motor.
The ideal lubricant contains stable, chemically inert particles of nano-size (<100nm) such that the roughness of the surface to be protected becomes as flat as possible. To get a sustaining improvement, the nano-particles must be of high hardness, since hard materials are less frictional than soft materials or mixtures of both. The nano lubricant additive BORPower® from NNT contains with MCDP exactly this type of nano-particles. BORPower® covers frictional metal surfaces with layers of MCDP nano-particles that are slippery, extremely resistant and long-lasting. Normally, such coatings require expensive surface refinement equipment such physical vapour deposition.
The frictional MCDP-treated surfaces now have a drastically reduced sliding friction coefficient. However, the sliding friction can be reduced even further by turning sliding into rolling friction. Image that you want to move a closet in your apartment: even if you grease the bottom of the closet, moving the closet just by shifting it will be hard work. Things are getting much easier if you have a dolly for moving the closet. Exactly the same effect is achieved idea with NNT’s MCDP nano-particles that are not integrated into the frictional metal surface: they roll between the MCDP layers like the balls in a ball bearing. Ultimately, the MCDP balls are “greased” by the solid lubricant nano boron, the second active ingredient of BORPower®. We arrive at a so-called ideal tribological system, i.e., the friction between the metal surfaces is minimal.
