Boron reserves
Boron minerals are minerals with a significant fraction of boron trioxide (B2O3). Commercially recoverable resources of B2O3 are found world-wide. The most important mining regions are:
· the Southwestern Mojave desert (USA),
· the South Central Asiatic-Alpine belt including Turkey and
· the South American Andean belt.
The most important boron minerals worth for recovery are:
| Mineral | Formula |
| Tincal | Na2B4O7.10H2O |
| Colemanite | Ca2B6O11.5H2O |
| Ulexite | NaCaB5O9.8H2O |
| Probertite | NaCaB5O9.5H2O |
| Kernite | Na2B4O7.4H2O |
| Datolite | CaBSiO4OH |
| Hydroboracid | CaMgB6O11.6H2O |
| Asharite | MgBO2OH |
Colemanite and Tincal are the most important minerals in the boron industry. Tincal is mined in large quantities in Kirka (Turkey), Boron (USA) and Tincalayu (Argentina). Kernite is another significant mineral of the mining site Boron. Turkey possesses the world’s largest resources of Colemanite. Another important source of Colemanite is the Death Valley in den USA. Ulexite is mined mostly in Turkey, in the Andes of South America and in China. The sum of all known boron resources is 885 million tons B2O3 with the following shares among the countries:
| Country | Resource in million tons B2O3 | % |
| Turkey | 563 | 64 |
| Russia | 100 | 11 |
| USA | 80 | 9 |
| Chile | 41 | 4 |
| China | 36 | 4 |
| Pere | 22 | 3 |
| Bolivia | 15 | 2 |
| Kazakhstan | 15 | 2 |
| Argentina | 9 | 1 |
| Total | 885 | 100 |
